Oh, what a stunning church indeed! I reside in Sitka myself, and just to make things clear, they do ask for a $5 entrance fee from visitors. You see, it's a small community mostly made up of seniors, and they don't receive any external assistance to upkeep the church. The "mandatory donation" goes towards preserving this remarkable structure.

I must say, it was quite disheartening to discover that the church was closed upon my arrival. Travelling all the way to Sitka only to find locked doors was rather disappointing, to say the least. It's a shame that they missed out on my intended donation, especially when the signs outside seemed so eager for support. Hopefully, they will reconsider their opening hours in the future to ensure that visitors like myself, and others who may have missed out, have the opportunity to experience the church.

Such a marvelous Russian Orthodox church with a rich history! The opening hours are quite limited, just from 1 to 2pm, but it is definitely worth a visit. The icons displayed were actually rescued from a devastating church fire and hold a special significance as they belong to the original church.

The admission fee for this establishment is $5.
It is mandatory and collected by a guard stationed near the entrance. Personally, I don't have an issue with contributing, but I believe it would be more appropriate to refer to it as an admission fee rather than a donation.
Furthermore, it is advisable not to ask too many questions as the staff may not be very forthcoming or welcoming in their responses.
